Themes Explain the ESD Strategic Plan/Report Demonstrate ESD has now clearly defined its vision, mission and goals Have removed ambiguity about what ESD is and what it is not Show Key Statistics and data Clearly show that ESD continues to grow and that its educational programs are popular, selective and that they produce first rate scholars and industry leaders However, our infrastructure has not kept up with growth Emphasis on the ESD PhD Program and the evolving fundamentals of the field. Very high quality research presentations that highlight the four domains/five approaches as well as a personal engagement (discussion, poster session) with a selection of our PhD students. Sending the message that we need support by including ESD in the MIT Capital Campaign with the goal of raising $50-80 million in the next three to five years. The bulk of these funds should be invested in the E40-Extension building project.

Progress since last VC Meeting (Nov 06) The ESD PhD program has made significant progress with now 46 graduates, nearly 40% of which went to academia. There are currently 62 ESD PhD students; selectivity of 26% and a yield of 74%. Further refinement of the core is ongoing by the education committee (Nancy Leveson) based on the Sussman committee, new rules coming into effect September 2008 and new core classes being developed and coordinated. The leadership vacuum in ESD has been filled both at the Director (Yossi Sheffi) and Associate Director level (Oli de Weck). The two recent successful tenure cases further confirm the long-term prospects of the unit. ESD has defined its intellectual footprint and strategy. Engineering Systems is both a class of systems as well as a developing field of scholarship at the intersection of engineering, management and the social sciences. The new 44 page Engineering Systems Strategic Report articulates ESD’s vision, mission and goals and gives specific example of excellence and relevance of Engineering Systems Scholarship. The ESD master’s programs continue to be healthy and attract excellent students and support. Rather than being just individually successful programs, their focus and further development is now being rationalized in the context of ESD.

New Challenges Increased linkage of engineering with management and the social sciences. As can be seen in the 43-node ESD faculty and staff social network, the participation of management (8 faculty) and social scientists (2 faculty) is still relatively modest. We would like to increase the hiring of dual cross-school faculty and give dual status to existing faculty. Infrastructure Development and Capital Campaign. In order to take the next step, in particular, a robust complex systems modeling and visualization capability – as mentioned in the 2006 ESD VC report – ESD should be included as a priority in the MIT Capital Campaign. Internal alignment of ESD research centers and the educational programs with the new vision. ESD has established a strategy that focuses on the following four research domains: (i) Extended Enterprises, (ii) Critical Infrastructures, (iii) Energy and Resource Sustainability and (iv) Health Care Delivery. The current three ESD research centers and four master’s programs are only partially aligned with these new priorities.
