I.Economic Imperialism A. Europeans and Americans invested in Latin America to ensure continued trade to get products unavailable to their home country. B. Latin American colonies were hurt by foreign investment that did not contribute to the economy. 1. Sent money home.

II. The Spanish-American War A. Disagreement w/ Spain over Cuba. B. Spain was blamed for the blowing up of the USS Maine.USS Maine. C. US defeated Spain in the Philippines and in Cuba. D. Cuba gained its’ independence. E. US received Puerto Rico. F. Platt Amendment- gave the US the right to intervene in Cuba

III. The Panama Canal A. Panama gained their independence from Columbia w/ the help of the US, in order to allow the US to finish the building of the canal.

IV. The Roosevelt Corollary A. U.S. would insure Latin American independence, also LA countries would repay their loans.

V. Mexico’s Revolution A. Porforio Diaz allowed foreign investors to control Mexico’s natural resources. B. Opponent, Madero, won the presidency over Diaz. C. Huerta seized control of the gov’t and had Madero killed. D. Carranza and Zapata led a revolution against Huerta. E. U.S. intervened to help Carranza and Zapata. F. Pancho Villa, rebel leader, fought against Carranza and the US.Pancho Villa G. U.S. was unable to capture Villa.

In-Class Activity Roosevelt Corollary Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? These are questions often asked by newspaper reporters when writing a story. You and a partner will write a short newspaper article about the Roosevelt Corollary that answers all of the questions. Two groups will be asked to read their story aloud to the class.
