The Wright Brothers, Orville ( August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912) invented and built the world’s first airplane.

Their "Wright Flyer" was a fabric-covered biplane with a wooden frame. The power to the two propellers was supplied by a 12-horsepower water-cooled engine. On December 17, 1903, the "Flyer" flew for 12 seconds and for a distance of 120 feet (37 m). The flight took place at Kitty Hawk,North Carolina, USA.

Before building their airplane, they had built a printing press and operated a bicycle repair and sales shop. They constructed their own bicycles. The profits from their bicycle business funded their airplane-building venture.

In 1843 William S. Henson, an inventor, patented plans for an airplane after trying to build a model airplane. When those plans failed he gave up on airplanes. His friend, John Stingfellow, tried making a model off of Henson's model and succeeded. The plane launched, but could only stay in the air for a short time.

Many tried to fly steam powered airplanes they built but failed. The, during 1894 Samuel Langley flew a steam powered plane and went 0.8 kilometers in one and a half minutes. Once Langley made another airplane, he got a pilot to steer once on October, 7 and once on December, 8, but sadly the plane crashed in a lake.

The principal benefits of aircraft is to reduce the time of travel, for both people & cargo. Accomadates to many different needs. It is also quicker, safer(airport checks) and more comfortable.
