Space....the Final Frontier

We live in a universe. Our universe has several galaxies in it. Do you know the name of the galaxy we live in?

We live in the galaxy called the “Milky Way Galaxy”.

Let’s make a double bubble map or a three column tree map of the Earth and Moon. EarthEarth and MoonMoon

The Earth around on its axis. (spins)

Important Facts The Earth takes 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis. The Earth’s 24 hour rotation causes day and night to happen.

The Moon around on its axis. (spins)

The Moon around the Earth. (goes around something)

Do you remember what causes the tides? Moon Earth Where is the moon during high tide? How about low tide?

Important Facts It takes the moon 27.3 days to revolve around the Earth. The moon is called a natural satellite. A satellite is anything that revolves around another object. The International Space Station is a manmade satellite. Earth has many cell phone satellites.

Have you ever seen the Moon’s face? What makes the marks that look that look like a face? Maria (Mar- i – a) Greek word for dark seas (really they are craters) Moon Trivia

Moon Trivia (continued) If the Earth is rotating and the Moon is revolving around the Earth, why do we always see the same side or face of the Moon? Because the Earth and the Moon rotate at the same speed.

Together, the Earth and the Moon around the sun.

Facts: It takes the Earth 365 days/1 year to REVOLVE around the Sun. Earth’s revolution around the Sun causes the seasons: »Winter »Spring »Summer »Fall

All of the planets revolve around the sun.

The planets do NOT make a perfect circle around the sun. Sun Moon Earth

The Moon does not make its own light. The reason it is lit up is because the sun’s light reflects off of it. Moon

Sometimes the Earth blocks some of the light from reflecting off of the Moon.

New Moon

First Quarter Moon

Full Moon

Last Quarter Moon

Space Trivia What keeps the moon revolving around the Earth? The Earth’s and Moon’s Gravity What keeps the planets revolving around the sun? The Sun’s and Planet’s Gravity What is the 2 major functions of the Moon to the Earth? The Moon’s gravity causes the ocean tides and gives us light at night.

What’s the same about the Moon and the Earth? Both have gravity, made from the same materials, both have craters, both rocky What’s different about the Moon and the Earth? Earth has an atmosphere, moon does not. Earth has weather, moon does not. Earth’s surface changes by weathering and erosion, moon’s surface is always the same. Earth has usable water, moon has frozen water. Why does the flag not wave on the Moon?

How long does it take the moon to make one complete revolution around the Earth? 27.3 days or about 1 month How long does it take the Earth to make one complete rotation on its axis? 24 hours or one day How long does it take the Earth to make one complete revolution around the Sun? 365 days or one year

Our galaxy is full of stars.

Do you know the name of the star that is most important to the Earth?

The sun is a medium sized star in our galaxy.

But it really is a medium size star. Then why does it look so big to us??? Because we are so close to it!!! Try the finger test!

The Sun is a medium size ball of burning gases!!! (helium & hydrogen)

What are those darker areas on the sun called? They are called sun spots!

What is a sunspot? Dark spots on the sun that are cooler areas than the rest of the sun.

More Sun Trivia… What are sunspots? Sun spots on the sun’s surface. They are darker than the rest of the sun because they are _____. They also help us prove that the sun rotates.

Does the Sun have gravity? YES.....in fact, it is the gravity from the sun that keeps all those planets revolving around it.

only 000Star Quiz for only the BRAVE...do you dare? What are all stars made out of? Burning gases (fusing, exploding) What is the name of the Earth’s star? The sun Why does it appear to be the biggest star in the sky? Because it is so close

Does the Sun rotate? Yes What proof do we have that the sun rotates? The sunspots move. Where does the Earth, the moon, and other planets get their light from? The sun Does the sun have an atmosphere? NO! NO! NO! You’re driving me crazy! It is just burning gases......hot, hot, hot!

Do stars like the sun ever move around the galaxy? No except when the burn out. (shooting stars) What is the name of the Earth’s star? The sun Can we ever land on the sun? No, you sillies. The sun is a ball of burning gases. It does not have a surface to land on & you would burn up if you got anywhere near it. 2000’ Celsius

What are the four most important things that Earth gets from the Sun? Light energy Heat energy Food energy Energy to start the water cycle (evaporation) What is solar energy? More Sun Trivia…

Plants get energy from the Sun. Animals eat the plants and now the energy is in the animal.

People eat the meat of animals or the byproducts of animals and then the energy is passed on for the human to use.

Plants get energy from the sun. Animals eat the fruits or vegetables and now the energy is in the human.

What tool would we use to see the stars? Inside of telescopes there are Convex lenses that help you see the stars and planets.

What is the diameter of the sun? 1.4 million kilometers or 870,000 miles wide. Earth is only 8760 miles wide.

What is the biggest star in our Milky Way Galaxy?

Does the sun rotate?

Why do the constellations appear to be in different places each night?

The stars never move. Think about the sun. It is a star. It never moves. Stars never move. The earth is moving (rotating and revolving), so it makes the stars LOOK like they are moving when really it is just the earth moving.

What are the seasons?

Why do we have seasons? The tilt of the earth on its axis is the main reason. The tilt of the earth causes some parts of the earth to get direct sunlight (more heat) and other parts of the earth to get indirect sunlight (less heat).

Direct heat (hot) Indirect heat (warm)

The Reason for the Seasons #1 = Earth’s tilt (direct and indirect sun light) #2 = Earth’s revolution

Why do objects weigh less on the moon than on earth? Gravity is the measure of how much gravity it takes to hold you down on earth. 50 pounds 25 pounds

The moon has less gravity so it takes less gravity to hold you on the moon. Less gravity = less weight 50 pounds 25 pounds

Why is it better to wear white clothing on a hot, sunny day? Think about this..... What colors absorb heat and which colors reflect heat? Dark colors absorb heat...so they hold heat inside. Light colors reflect heat....so they reflect the heat off of the materials.

Which car will be hotter inside and why? 95” inside120’ inside

Which shirt will be hotter to wear and why? 85” inside100’ inside

Light colors reflect heat!!!! Dark colors absorb heat!!!!!
