Lay the foundation for your goals! Why do I want an internship? What experiences do I hope to have? What skills do I want to develop? What accomplishments do I want to come away with?

Goal Types/Categories: 1. Knowledge goals: focus on the work that you do – understanding factual information, principles, concepts, practices of the profession Become familiar with the public relations industry in the Pacific NW Learn ways organizations can pursue mediation in their HR practices 2. Skill goals: focuses on things you want to learn to do Learn to balance general ledgers (debits/credits) Develop ability to work within a large, diverse team 3. Attitude and Value goals: focus on attitudes and values you want to improve in yourself Being open to criticism about my performance Being more communicative and extroverted with my opinion

I want to see how a marketing plan develops from beginning to end. I hope to observe a trial in Family Court. I want to see the responsibilities of a financial analyst first hand. I want to work with special needs adults to see if that’s a population I am comfortable with. I hope to find out how the board of a nonprofit organization works. Am I more interested in the management track or applied track in an engineering firm? Move onto specifics about experiences you want to have…

Make your goals S.M.A.R.T! Specific goal Tasks/Action steps to accomplish -how will you achieve the goal? Evaluation method -how you will determine the goal has been met? -how will you combat obstacles? Deadline for goal completion -the date when you will evaluate

SMART Goal Example Increase my understanding of media relations Discuss with journalists what they expect in a media release - and what they usually do with them Write a media release that gets published and broadcast Call journalists to brief them on the media release Ask my supervisor and colleagues to evaluate the effectiveness of my media release 2 weeks after it has been sent Specific goal Tasks / Action Steps Evaluation Method Deadline

You’ll need to outline 4 to 6 SMART goals for your internship The earlier you can start reflecting on what these might be, the more prepared you will be to set great goals!
