ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will learn all about Independence Day and why it is so important to the United States of America. Students will integrate technology into Social Studies. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will learn the background knowledge and challenges individuals faced in order to gain independence for the United States. The important patriotic symbols will be recognized and presented. Process/Skills: Students will critically think of the difficulties, values, and benefits of gaining independence. Students will use technology to grasp social studies skills. Values/Dispositions: Students will value what it means to be independent.

Topics that will be discussed include background knowledge of how the United States achieved their independence, important patriotic symbols, patriotic music, the difficulties that were faced, and the values and benefits of the United States Independence. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 16.B.1b (US) Explain why individuals, groups, issues and events are celebrated with local, state or national holidays or days of recognition (e.g., Lincoln’s Birthday, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Pulaski Day, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving). National – NCSS Themes Power, Identity, and Governance

Using the delicious bookmarks and the classroom textbook, students will gather and collect information regarding Independence Day. The delicious bookmark that is listed has a surplus of information. In class, there will be discussion of the material and what the class should really be focusing on. Students will be put into groups of 3-5 students. Through collaboration, the students will integrate their ideas together on an important American symbol that is listed. The Liberty Bell The Eagle The Declaration of Independence The Statue of Liberty The Pledge of Allegiance The Flag The students will be using “Storyboard That” as a learning activity. This resource allows students to input pictures and text that are important to their topic. This resource is listed on the Delicious Bookmark page. After completion of the learning activity the students will present their ideas and knowledge to the class. Objective

With the delicious bookmark, the students will be able to view multiple patriotic songs that are essential to our history. As a class, we will view and analyze the lyrics provided. We will talk about the importance of our Independence and make relations to the writer’s of the songs feelings and instincts when creating the songs. Together we will create our own lyrics that pertain to Independence and how appreciative we are to be free. Intuitive

Positive/Strengths This lesson focuses on the value and benefits of Independence and being an American. With the Delicious Bookmark, students can view instructions of this learning activity. Students will be creating a festive flag. The instructions are online for the students to view. The students will each receive 5 stars for the main piece of the project. On these stars, the students will write their values and/or benefits of Independence Day.

Using the delicious bookmarks, as a class we will be viewing “The First Independence Day.” This clip demonstrates the challenges and hardships some individuals faced in order for our country to gain independence. While viewing the video, students will collect many ideas of people who faced these hardships. As a learning activity, the students will select and individual or experience and write a short paragraph demonstrating their knowledge. Negatives/Weaknesses

Creative Using the delicious bookmark, the students will use tagxedo to create a word cloud. This learning activity will allow students to each think of their own words that are relative to Independence Day or the Fourth of July. After inputting the words into the system, the students will select “Shapes” and find the image of the United States of America. This learning activity allows students to view the words the have learned so much about all through one innovative picture.

As a wrap up, the students will be creating a video as newscasters. Using webcams the students will create a video of important facts and details they learned throughout the Independence Day Lessons. Paired in groups, students will collaborate and create a video of factual information that they have learned from each of the other “hats”.

Students will be assessed by their work created together on the online Storyboard. Is it factual? Are the images relative to the topic? Red Hat: Students will be assessed by their collaboration and group participation. Yellow Hat: Students will be assessed by their product and it’s relation to Independence Day values and benefits. Are the words relative? Black Hat: Students will be assessed by their knowledge and concentration of difficulties found throughout the video. Green Hat: Students will be assessed by their product created online. Do the words relate to the topic? Is the student off subject? Does the image coordinate? Blue Hat: Students will be assessed by their collaboration and group participation. Was the final product relative to Independence Day or was it off topic? Was everyone broadcasted in the video?
