Page 3 Sapphire Training on 6/9 Explanation of the Relation between Al 2 O 3 Density and Weight (Force) 1.The density of Al 2 O 3 at the melting point is 3.05 g/cm^3 and 2.75 g/cm^3 when the temperature is 150 ℃ higher than that of the melting point. The average density in whole crucible is 2.88g/cm^3. When the ingot starts touching the bottom of the crucible, the theoretical force (weight) is 23kg but 19~20kg from the reading of the sensor. Density of the Melt 3.05 2.75 2050 2200 Temperature ρ average =2.88g/cm^3 160mm 200mm 100mm

Page 4 Sapphire Training on 6/9 Explanation of the Relation between Al 2 O 3 Density and Weight (Force) 2.The specification of the distance between the crucible top and the melt surface is from 50mm to 75mm. If it’s 50mm, the weight of ingot will be 35kg. And if it’s 65mm, the weight of ingot will be 33kg. Actually, the distance decides the no. of times for seeding. 1.The length of seed is 130mm and 50mm is for holding. 2.The consumed length for each seeding is about 1~2mm.

Page 5 Sapphire Training on 6/10 Explanation of Timing for Detaching 1.The method of determining the next action is “weight” At the stage of growth and “voltage” at the annealing/detachment stage. If the end voltages for last two run are 8.486V and 8.377V, the end voltage for the current run should 8.37V (choose the minimum one to ensure that all material is solidified. How to decide the end voltage for the 1 st run? Put some pieces of Al 2 O 3 into crucible and check at which voltage it’s melted. 6 cm below the top of the crucible If the small pieces melts at 8.35V, 8.35V is the end voltage for the 1 st run.

Page 6 Sapphire Explanation of the Detaching Procedure 1.Increase the weight to 38kg or 40kg by roll. 2.Increase 300mV if sticking or increasing 100mV if not sticking. 3.Move the rod and pull up 1.5mm when the weight is going down. 4.Decrease 400mV and 100mV 20mins later if sticking. If not sticking decrease 100mV and 100mV 20mins later. Training on 6/10

Page 7 Sapphire 1.Observation of taking the ingot out: no any tool just by a strong hand. 2.Check the ingot quality: crack due to tool excursion and some bubbles found on the top. 3.Sky learnt how to curve the W sticks: two type. 4.Tool Excursion: The chamber pressure jumped at 10:45 on 6/12 ( 2 nd day after detachment) because the mechanical pump is broken which may be the root cause of crack. Moreover, the oil of the diffusion pump came into the chamber and contaminated the cover, heater, seed holder and so on. Training on 6/14
