2. Do Now: In Chapter 8, someone put a blanket on Scout. Who do you think it was? What clues were in the chapter to help you reach your prediction? Think about what we know about the characters so far.

3. Learning about Characters Direct and Indirect Characterization

4. Characterization Have you ever gotten to know a character so well that you were a little sad when the story was over? How is it that a writer can create a character on a page and make readers feel as if they have met a real person?

5. Characterization The way a writer reveals character is called characterization. Poor characterization can make a character uninteresting, because that character may lack focus and clarity.

6. Good characterization creates a clear picture in the readers mind. Dressed in a colorful blue and yellow costume, the matador prepared his satin cape for the charging bull.

7. Direct Characterization direct characterization: the author or narrator makes direct statements about a character’s traits. The author tells us about the character’s personality to our face. TELLING Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” Explanation: The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”

8. Indirect Characterization Indirect characterization: the author or narrator reveals a character’s traits through his or her actions and speech. SHOWING When Jane walked in the room, nobody could help but look at her stunning, gorgeous face. She commanded attention wherever she went due to her good looks. Jim was very unlike any other businessman. He made sure that all his clients got what they had paid for. Jim is honest and hardworking. Jane is beautiful.

10. Read the following passage, paying attention to the character’s appearance. The girl in the fancy dress and high-heeled shoes squirmed uncomfortably on the hard wooden bench. Her eyes, lips, and hands were clenched. Her head drooped and her chin hung low. A tear slid down her face. How does this girl feel? What details suggest this feeling?

12. STEAL METHOD SPEECH - What does the character say? How does the character speak? THOUGHTS - What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? EFFECTS - What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? ACTIONS - What does the character do? How does the character behave? LOOKS - What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

13. Practice "Which one is the boy with the reddish brown hair?" I asked. "That's Edward. He's gorgeous, of course, but don't waste your time. He doesn't date. Apparently none of the girls here are good looking enough for him. - pg 22 Type of characterization of Edward? – Direct (and indirect) Proof? Direct: “Reddish brown hair,” Indirect: He’s picky and choosy about who he dates.
