GCRC Informatics Project Sponsor: Dr. Paul Harris, GCRC Informatics Director Members: Chris Heath, BME/EE Adam Nagel, CompE Chris Nash, EE Brendan Soar, CompE November 2, 2004 Second Presentation
2
Progress since last week Additional research in GCRC –New Requirement: Electrical isolation for connections to monitors –Neither wireless net nor server on NOVELL network (TCP/IP, SSID required) User interface specifications Research into four approaches –FPGA-based solution –PDA-based solution –Embedded PC –Memory Stick
3
Dinamap monitors require strict electrical isolation ILC-1927 adaptor (pictured) provides optically isolated RJ-45 serial connections Other monitors may require similar adaptors to comply with isolation requirements Dinamap sales rep to visit on Wednesday morning
4
Device requirements and user interface specs Easy to use user interface –Keyboard/command entry capability –Display ROM to hold program Memory for results storage Serial output or serial emulation capability –Can be hard-wired or wireless
5
Prospective Palm-based Solution DINAMAPSerial-BluetoothBluetooth-Serial Palm Easy to use user interface UI already integrated with processor and I/O devices Can use COTS for each interface Relatively inexpensive design solution Use a Bluetooth connection to emulate a serial connection
6
Prospective Palm-based Solution DINAMAPSerial-BluetoothBluetooth-Serial Palm Use products like AirCable to connect serial ports wirelessly and connect a palm to a device with a serial I/O port Uses bluetooth to emulate a serial connection Minimal setup to make connection work Low-Cost implementation Many examples on internet where palm devices have been successfully interfaced with electrical sensor devices and medical devices. www.aircable.net
7
Blue Tooth Transfer Protocol Data Link Layer: Logical Link Control and Adaptation Layer Protocol (L2CAP) Either synchronous (connection-oriented) or asynchronous (connectionless-oriented) RFCOMM runs on top of L2CAP to emulate serial ports (based off of TS 07.10 standard) http://www.palowireless.com/infotooth/tutorial/rfcomm.asp
8
FPGA based design solution Essentially a programmable digital logic gate Performs task according to a state variable model Can be connected to memory modules and external devices Must be remapped after changes to the program
9
Problems with FPGA Dr. Bapty and Dr. Robinson disagree with the use of FPGA User Interface Re-programmability Packaging Cost Essentially creating a PALM out of an FPGA (FPGA + Keypad + Display)
10
Other Solutions Embedded PC –Small computer system on small board –Multiple interfaces, can run Linux SOPC (system-on-programmable-chip) –Interfaces with FPGA’s –Own IDE –Can connect serially –Nios II Memory Stick
11
Objectives for this week Meet with DINAMAP rep on Wednesday Research the other design solutions –PDA, Embedded PC, Memory Stick, SOPC Update website Update Schedule
