Awareness  As students, it is important to be aware of how much privacy is being invaded on mobile devices, computers, etc.  Be aware of what websites are asking you, as it may be a marketing strategy  Notice when you’re on Facebook or any website, they have advertisements on the side from websites you have previously went on or bought from, trying to attract you  A survey conducted by Pew Research Center of 2,254 adults (18 and older) concentrated on privacy and data management on mobile devices  54% decided not to install an app because of the personal information needed to be shared  30% UNINSTALLED after being aware of how much personal information the app was asking

3. YOUR future  What you post on Facebook or Instagram can affect your future, school and job wise.  A 21-year-old male, posted a Facebook status about how the guard on campus “loves to antagonize students…and needs to be eliminated.”  Another student reported this status and the student got expelled  A 19-year-old male student internship application was rejected because his Facebook page had a picture of him holding a bottle of vodka  Was considered as bad judgment and breaking the law according to the company

4. Addiction  Even if we do not want to admit it, we are addicted to technology  Excitement when we get notifications  Emotion due to a dopamine (neurotransmitter control brain’s reward and pleasure) trigger  Sharing photos/statuses  “The combination of smartphones and social media is indispensable to us yet that dependency also offers fertile ground for hackers” (Itzkovitch).

5. How to “Protect” your Privacy  Delete browsing history, including your cookies (small text files that are deposited on users’ computers when visiting a site)  Don’t install applications that ask too much personal information  Be careful what you post on your profiles  Switch off location and Bluetooth (only use when necessary)  Try to use technology less (I know that’s hard but life still existed before technology came)  In the end, it is up to YOU!
