SPI 0807.9.7 Density What is density?  Density is the amount of matter (mass) you have crammed in a given space (volume) Reminder: mass is how much matter is in an object  The unit for mass is grams (mg or g or kg) Reminder: volume is how much space it takes up (size)  Unit for solid volume is cubic meters (cm 3 or m 3 or km 3 )  Unit for liquid volume is liters (mL or L or kL) To compute density  - divide the mass by the volume of the object Science Notes

SPI 0807.9.7 Density Science Notes Density In Liquids  Lower density liquids float on top of liquids with higher density  Higher density liquids will sink below lower density liquids Here is a density column with 6 liquids 06 05 04 03 02 01  The top liquid (06)- is the least dense  The bottom liquid (01)- is the most dense  one liquid has a density of 2.5 g/mL  one liquid has a density of 0.7 g/mL  one liquid has density of 1.7 g/mL Bottom: 2.5 g/mL (liquid 01) -greatest density Top: 0.7 g/mL (liquid 06) -least density Question: Which of these liquids would be on the bottom, and which one would be on top?

Mass: 19g Volume: 7cm 3 (A) (D) (C) (B) Mass: 12g Volume: 3cm 3 4 g/cm 3 2.71 g/cm 3 Mass: 11g Volume: 3cm 3 3.6 g/cm 3 Mass: 23g Volume: 5cm 3 4.6 g/cm 3 Science Notes SPI 0807.9.7 Density Which cube below has the LEAST density? Do not use a calculator. Compute density on your paper while I work it on the board. Show all your work, and don't Forget Your Units! written like this… g/cm 3

Science Notes SPI 0807.9.7 Density Answer this question. Again, do not use a calculator, and show all your work. Compute the density on your paper while I work it on the board. Density= 90 810.0 Density= volume mass Answer 9 g/cm 3

Science Notes SPI 0807.9.7 Density Answer this question. Do not use a calculator. Work it out on your paper while I do it on the board. Show all your work. Sample A 1 g/ml Sample B 0.8 g/ml Sample C 1.08 g/ml Sample D 0.9 g/ml Sample A D= 100 100 Sample B D= 100 80 Sample C D= 100 108 Sample D D= 100 90 Don't Forget Your Units! written like this… g/ml
