Density Column Lab

What is a physical property?

It is a property that can be observed without changing the state

What are some examples of physical properties?

 Color  Shape  Density  Volume  Length  Location  Temperature  Speed

Density  What is density?

The relationship between the mass and the how much space is taken up (volume)

What kind of things can have a density?

 All states of matter can have a density Solid Liquid Gas

Density Column Lab Things you need:  A labeled beaker with a substance AND/OR a solid object  A Lab Report Sheet

Lab Overview  We are going to fill the graduated cylinder with each of the substances in front of you and see how they interact

Lab Report  Fill in your materials list, your purpose, and your hypothesis  As we complete each step in this lab, fill each one in the procedure section in great detail  As we complete each step fill in the data/observations/results section

Procedure  Fill the graduated cylinder with the corn syrup first making sure not to let any hit the edges on the cylinder  Tilt the graduated cylinder slightly, and pour the dish soap in so it slides down the inside wall of the graduated cylinder  Repeat the same step with water  Repeat the same step with vegetable oil  Repeat the same step with ethanol

Observations  What do we see?  Did this match our hypothesis?  Why did this happen?  How does this connect with density?

Procedure  Record under the hypothesis section what you think will happen when we add each of the solid objects around you  Drop the screw into the graduated cylinder  Drop the die into the graduated cylinder  Drop the can top into the graduated cylinder  Drop the ping pong ball into the graduated cylinder  RECORD ALL OBSERVATIONS

Conclusions  What did we learn from this lab?  What order did our liquids stay at in the cylinder?  Why did they do this?  Were our predictions correct?
