doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research RRM MIB Enhancement Paired with 03/171r0 Word doc Byoung-Jo “J” Kim AT&T Labs-Research March ’03, Dallas

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research FYI!! Spectrum Policy: Property or Commons? Stanford Law School Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2, 2003 http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/spectrum/ Video streams, blogs and documents online

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Starting Point 02-676r0-RRM-SG & 02-652r1-RRM-SG No explicit structural distinction between AP and STA: Current MIB architecture –“Type” or “class” information What you measure directly between you and someone: under MAC branch –Include PHY parameters (RSSI, CCA) here? What you are told by others: under SMT branch Actions requested via SNMP: under SMT branch –How to connect this action back to MIB variables under other branches? Conformance table untouched for now Only additions at the end of structures for backward compatibility

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Split between SMT and MAC Branches Under SMT Reports Table –Results of Measurement Req/Report –Measurement Request to Self by SME –Measurement Request to Others by SME Under MAC per STA table and under PHY –Measured locally –Side info during routine operation –Autonomous measurements for any reason –More info available than action/report, especially at AP

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Variable Choices Obvious ones extended to per STA –Per Inf counters: Not all May be needed Place Holders for TGh Report elements –Need to work out How to encode in MIB –As is into Octet String? –each field into a varible is preferred for readibility A lot of things will not be useful or otherwise better off without –Let’s find them and remove A lot were missed in this attempt –Let’s find them and discuss Caveat: More Variable Names need to be localized.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Issues Time information on non-counter variables –the instant measurement performed –Measurement duration, Averaging duration Duration is usually handled in TU –Keep only the latest? Or last few? Window averaging? MIB is not very good with history keeping –Assume current system time “TimeTicks” SNMP type and indicate time relative to it? –Relative to TSF? Data Aging to keep table growing too much: How long? And of course, the precise definitions of many parameters. So, unfortunately, text for draft was not fully finished

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Counter Table (per Interface) Standard Counters here

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Per-STA stats Table Includes all STAs ever heard or communicated –Some variables do not make sense to those not in communication or depending on mode, or STA or AP –Split them into? In direct communication and Just heard (decoded headers for contention, CCA, CTS, Beacon)? AP table and STA table?

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Per STA stats Table Standard Counters

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Reports Table Not my measurement or observation Placeholder for reports by other STAs on a third STA –Otherwise go into per-STA table Will TGk implement “measure THIS on THAT STA”? Since these variables need to be transferred between STAs, Many will have to be taken out –We have not figured out how to do transfer –Many of the standard counters –Many of the per-STA variables

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Reports Table Standard Counters

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Actions Table As per Mike Moreton’s 02-652r1 Queue for actions set by SNMP Results can go into per STA stats table if the link involves yourself or in direct communication Results can go into report table if involves a third party Results can be notified to SNMP manager if notification bit is set

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Actions Table

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Misc.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Misc.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Status Thanks to discussions and help from the group –Per STA stats under MAC looks good Other parts need more work Suggestion: –Instead of working informally, move to incorporate per STA stats table into Draft so that everyone can look at it more seriously and think about other parts further.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-03/171r2A Submission March 2003 Byoung-Jo “J” Kim, AT&T Labs-Research Motion Move to Request the editor incorporate the marked MIB sections into the TGk draft –In 03-171r1 (also contains other parts of the MIB being worked for FYI.) –dot11staStatsTable under MAC branch –Local measurements
