BETTER LEARNING THROUGH PLCS CHOLLA HIGH MAGNET SCHOOL PLC TRAINING 2015-2016 P.L.C. AT WORK

Fundamental Assumptions Reflect on the statements below:  All students do not learn the same way  Some students lack academic behaviors  Educators start each day with honorable intentions, work tirelessly on behalf of their students, and utilize the best strategies they possess  No one teacher has all the skills, knowledge and time necessary to meet the needs of all students assigned to his or her class How do these statements correlate with the purpose of PLCs? (Be prepared to discuss with table.)

OBJECTIVES By the end of the session, participants will be able to...  Describe the work of a PLC  Explain the PLC cycle By actively listening to the presentation and participating in group discussion.

PLC Homework Share out your homework assignment from last week  Introduce a team member, share one artifact about their classroom.  Where will your PLC be meeting on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday?

PLC Expectations 8-24 Structure Attendance and Reflection Log Group Roles Norms Contractual Obligations Start times/End times

What is a PLC An ongoing process Educators work collaboratively Done in recurring cycles of collective inquiry Uses action research to achieve better results for the students we serve

Team’s Responsibility Collaborative teacher teams would establish a guaranteed and viable curriculum, unit by unit, to ensure all students have access to the same knowledge and skills, regardless of the teacher they are assigned.

Don’t Undermine the Process We can’t: Become a pseudo PLC Collaborate by invitation Function as groups rather than teams Distribute curriculum to individual teachers, pretending that it will create a guaranteed and viable curriculum

PLC Cycles Schedule weekly collaboration time Identify essential learning and review District common curriculum Create assessments that evaluate essential learning Evaluate then review the data Make changes to our teaching based on that data Provide interventions for students who need more help

Closure PLC work for the week (T, Th, F): With your PLC team members, using either the paper provided or paper you have, create a visual representation of the PLC cycle and come prepared to present next Monday.
