1 The Five Pillars of Islam Islam expects certain actions of its followers. The Five Pillars: 1.Declaration of faith 2.Daily prayer 3.Charity giving 4.Fasting during holy month of Ramadan 5.Pilgrimage to Mecca

2 1. Shahada (D eclaration of faith) “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger”.

3 2. Salat (Daily Prayer) * * * * *  Prayer is required 5 times per day: * dawn * noon * late afternoon * sunset * before bed  Wash before prayer, and face the direction of Mecca.  Attend mosque on Friday.

4 3. Zakat (Charity Giving)  The giving of charity / donations is expected, if possible.  Muslims believe that all things belong to God.  Zakat means both “purification” & “growth.”  About 2.5% of your total income.

5 4. Sawm (Fasting)  Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.  Fasting is considered a method of self- purification.  No food or drink from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan.

6 5. Hajj (Pilgrimage)  The pilgrimage to Mecca.  Must be done at least once in a Muslims’ lifetime.  2-3 million Muslims make the religious journey every year.
