The Five Pillars of Islam Islam expects certain actions of its followers. The Five Pillars: 1.Declaration of faith 2.Daily prayer 3.Charity giving 4.Fasting during holy month of Ramadan 5.Pilgrimage to Mecca

1. Shahada (D eclaration of faith) “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger”.

2. Salat (Daily Prayer) * * * * * Prayer is required 5 times per day: * dawn * noon * late afternoon * sunset * before bed Wash before prayer, and face the direction of Mecca. Attend mosque on Friday.

3. Zakat (Charity Giving) The giving of charity / donations is expected, if possible. Muslims believe that all things belong to God. Zakat means both “purification” & “growth.” About 2.5% of your total income.

4. Sawm (Fasting) Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Fasting is considered a method of self- purification. No food or drink from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan.

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage) The pilgrimage to Mecca. Must be done at least once in a Muslims’ lifetime. 2-3 million Muslims make the religious journey every year.
