The Krumin Timeline Two boys who were born and raised in Lisarow. They left Australia as ANZACs 12 years before our school was even open. Their names were Arthur and John Krumin. This is their story

Arthur was the older brother and was 21 years old when he enlisted. John was only 18 Arthur was a plate layer by trade He had a fair complexion and blue eyes He was a short man – 1.7metres who weighed only 64 kilos John’s trade was a plate cleaner He was also fair, with grey eyes and light brown hair He was shorter than Arthur – 1.66 metres but was a little heavier weighing in at 70 kilos That’s him, there!

Both boys were enlisted as Privates to fight in the Great War (WW1) Arthur Arthur was in the Cyclist Battalion carrying messages across the war zones on his bicycle. He enlisted in 1916 and embarked from Sydney on the ship HMAT Clan McGillivay on the 3 rd of May. John John was in the infantry and then in the machine gun battalion He enlisted in November 1916, 6 months after his brother, embarking on the ship HMAT Benalla.

After 5 weeks on the ship travelling across the world, Arthur disembarked in Egypt, from there he went to France and Belgium. Arthur suffered a lot of illness and was wounded in action in France after 2 years of fighting. He was sent home six months later.

After 8 weeks John disembarked in England and from there he was sent to Belgium and France. John also suffered from illness, was wounded in action 12 months after leaving Sydney and 6 months later while fighting in France he was gassed. John returned home in June 1919, 2 and ½ years after he left Sydney.

Home Both boys, although wounded, were able to return home, marry and start a family. One of the brothers became an Orchardist back in the Lisarow area. We don’t know any more to their story except that John died at the age of 56 and Arthur, 66. We thank you both, and all the brave men and women who fought alongside you. LEST WE FORGET
