2 -First form of government -Government receives power from the people -derives from a Greek word that means “rule of the people” -EVERY citizen has an active role in the political process

4 Everyone, including those in charge, must obey the laws! THE GOVERNMENT HAS LIMITS TO ITS POWERS!!

6 Rulers can do whatever they want without regard to the law. The government has no limits to their power!!!

7 UNLIMITED GOVERNMENT TREE Totalitarian- the state holds total authority over society and seeks to control all aspects of public and private life Absolute Monarchy Dictatorship Communism Ruled by one Ruled by few King/Queen=all powerLeader has usually seized power Small group or council Passed on through the Family (hereditary) Break promisesGroup of “dictators” Citizens have few rights if any Citizen have few rights Decisions made quickly People’s needs neglected Censorship of media and press Controls army and economy, censorship of press Ex: North Korea Ex: Saudi ArabiaEx: Cuba

8 OTHER TYPES OF GOVERNMENT: Oligarchy-Government is led by a small group of people. Decisions are made much like a dictatorship and/or communism. (China) Direct Democracy- Government is ruled by the people. Decisions are made by majority rule. (early US colonies, New England) Theocracy-Government is ruled divinely. Decisions are made based on religious beliefs (Iran, Vatican City)

9 Anarchy Anarchy is a situation where there is no government. This can happen after a civil war in a country, when a government has been destroyed and rival groups are fighting to take its place.
