Ecosystems Review Questions

The chart above shows the characteristics of four environments. In which habitat would a Platypus likely be found?

Study the snake and its habitat. A. warm, wet swamp B. cool, damp forest C. warm, grassy plain D. hot, dry desert

Blue-green algae are tiny water organisms. Many blue- green algae live in lakes. Blue-green algae feed mostly on something called phosphorus. Some phosphorus occurs naturally in lakes. Extra phosphorus can get into lakes also. One way extra phosphorus gets into lakes is from fertilizer. Fertilizer is something people put on their lawns to make them grow. When it rains, the rain carries some of the fertilizer into lakes. Which of these tells what will most likely happen to the blue-green algae in a lake if a lot of fertilizer gets into the lake? A.The number of blue-green algae in the lake will go up. B.The number of blue-green algae in the lake will go down. C.The number of blue-green algae in the lake will stay the same.

Study the picture of the alligator in its habitat. The alligator’s habitat is best described as a – A.Field B.Desert C.Mountain D.swamp

A large amount of waste is dumped into a pond. The fish in the pond will most likely -- A.Become sick or die B.Become very big and strong C.Become frogs

The sea near the South Pole is home to many underwater sea animals. Many of these animals can live only in very cold water. If the water temperature rises even a few degrees, they cannot live. If the sea near the South Pole becomes warmer over time, what will most likely happen to these animals? A.The number of these animals will stay the same. B.There will be many more of these animals than there were before. C.There will be fewer of these animals as they die out.

There are no woolly mammoths alive today. They have become extinct. Scientists are not sure why they disappeared. Some think that they could not survive changes in the environment where they lived. Which type of change would have made it hard for woolly mammoths to survive? A.There were fewer and fewer animals that ate mammoths. B.The land changed from rocky to grassy. C.There were more and more plants for mammoths to eat. D.The climate changed from cool to hot.
