1 Friday 9/15/2006 Today’s Standards hit: 5.1.12.C – Evaluate the major importance of the principles and ideals of civic life. 5.1.12.I - Analyze historical examples of the importance of the rule of law explaining the sources, purposes and functions of law. 5.1.12.E – Analyze the principles and ideals that shape the United States and compare them to documents of government.

2 Intro Activity: 9/15/2006 Why is it important for the towns we live in to have agencies like sheriffs (police), prisons, coroners, judges, juries, etc.? Today’s Standards hit: 5.1.12.C – Evaluate the major importance of the principles and ideals of civic life. 5.1.12.I - Analyze historical examples of the importance of the rule of law explaining the sources, purposes and functions of law. 5.1.12.E – Analyze the principles and ideals that shape the United States and compare them to documents of government.

3 Today’s Objectives: 1.Identify the three basic concepts of government that influenced the U.S. 2.Explain how the following landmark documents affected the American Bill of Rights: Magna Carta, the Petition of Rights, the English Bill of Rights 3.List the basic rights found in the American Bill of Rights and from which landmark document they were derived. There are fundamental rights that we are all born with…some of these are specifically written out (freedom of religion) others are implied (freedom to go to public school) If you could assure your children just one “right” throughout their life which would it be and why do you believe this? 5.1.12.I - Analyze historical examples of the importance of the rule of law explaining the sources, purposes and functions of law.
