Lesson 3: Electricity, Heat and Other Forms of Energy

How Do We Know Heat is There??? Heat can be demonstrated by: - Feeling the light bulb warm up - Displaying electrical devices that convert electrical energy into heat - Toasters - Curling Irons - Kettles - We see the elements get hot = heat is there - These elements are insulators!!! - Prevent the heat from escaping when it is generated - If they were conductors, heat would never be retained

How Do We Use Electricity in Everyday Life??? If the power in your house goes out, what would you do? How did you cope without electricity? How has the many electrical inventions before and after our births changed our lifestyles? How have we become dependent on electricity over the years?

Some Energy Videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_fvbO 2VXjchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_fvbO 2VXjc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkuD7y Q3gFk&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkuD7y Q3gFk&feature=related

Sources of Energy Chemical Energy - Batteries - Fossil fuels - Natural gas, coal and oil are examples - Formed over thousands of years by compressed decomposing materials Mechanical Energy - Wind, Water, Steam Solar Energy - Sun Nuclear Energy - Radioactive particles (Radium) heated to produce energy These can all form electrical energy

Diagram of How Energy is Created

Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy Renewable Energy - Can be reused - Wind, water, tidal, solar Non-Renewable Energy - Cannot be reused used only once - Nuclear energy, fossil fuels, chemicals

In Your Science Books, read together pages 30-33 Do the exploration activity on page 32 How is most electricity produced in Gambo?

For Next Time… Interview your parents, grandparents, or older people in the community about electrical devices that have been developed in their lifetimes and how these devices have changed their lives.
