Smart Thinking and 10-10 Team Indicators Identifying Needs and Implementing Change Dr. Art Markman Director, HDO Program The University of Texas at Austin

Design of a Chlor-Alkali plant –Designer was trying to avoid exotic metals normally needed –Chemicals were not reactive to plastics used in piping Had not been done before –Designer recommended a less-expensive solution –After months of deliberation, client declined Went with a much more expensive and time-consuming design Why? –This is a people problem The problem

The role of people in the construction process A tool for measuring people problems Processes for dealing with people issues What I’m going to do

CII has developed the 10-10 questionnaire At different project stages, assess key issues –Many of these are people/culture issues A high degree of trust, respect and transparency existed among companies. There were effective mechanisms to resolve issues. Team members had the information they needed. People worked together effectively as a team Team members were clear about their roles. Measuring Problems

Provides a measure for the people issues that are often hard to assess Puts data about people on a par with financial and structural data –Numbers tend to take on a life of their own Allows companies to identify problems that can increase the expense or safety of a project. Value of the 10-10 Program

Expertise in typical teams –Engineering, design, construction, process management. –Few experts in people issues. It is important to cultivate people expertise. The Human Dimensions of Organizations Program The Smart Approach What to do with the results?

Develop Good Habits Acquire High Quality Knowledge Deploy that Knowledge when needed How would this help with the Chlor-Alkali plant described at the beginning? Smart Thinking

Smart Change Identify Goals Create Good Plans Manage Obstacles Structure the Environment Engage People

Summary People are a core issue in large-scale projects. We can help you measure people We can help you implement change.

Implementation Session What you will receive: –Insight from the 10-10 Program –Ways to think smarter –My book
