Weather and Climate Weather is the set of environmental conditions encountered from day to day. Climate is the set of environmental conditions averaged over many years.

How Water Moderates Air Temperature
Large bodies of water have a moderating effect on atmospheric temperature and can effect the climate of a near by region Large surface water can keep a region from experiencing high temperatures in the summer and low temperatures in the winter
5
Heat Capacity Heat capacity is the ability of a substance to absorb heat. Water has a high heat capacity than air or land... It takes a long time to heat up and a long time to cool down. - Oceans can store large amounts of heat. Currents will transfer this heat to other parts of the world. - Air has a low heat capacity…It takes a short time to heat up and cool down
6
Moderation in Action Water takes a lot of energy to heat water. But water can hold that heat longer than air or land. Large bodies of water (ocean or lake) can absorb heat and release it into the atmosphere as water vapour.

Water Bodies and Regional Climate
Around the world, large bodies of water contributor to climate differences from one region to another. Microclimates A microclimate is an area with a climate that differs somewhat from the climate of the area around it. Ex. Farmers living close to the Great Lakes have a longer frost-free period than farmers elsewhere in Ontario

Water Bodies and Global Climate
The northern hemisphere is 39% land and 61% ocean The southern hemisphere is 19% land and 81% ocean Which hemisphere is going to have more of a variation in temperature and why? Northern hemisphere Why? Southern hemisphere has more water surrounding it, which causes the temperature to vary less.
