Homework District guidelines state 20-40 minutes/day Handed out Monday and due back the following Monday As a family you may choose how to divide up the homework so that it is completed for Monday. Contains a reading log, spelling words, writing activities, and math. Additional math and other content area homework can be assigned sporadically…Please check your child’s agenda DAILY.

Math Kyrene adopted a combined series for our math resources: Investigations in Data and Space an activity based math resource Scott Foresman (SFAW) a traditional textbook approach Curriculum still consists of the 6 math strands –Numeration –Measurement –Geometry –Data Analysis –Patterns/Algebra –Problem Solving

Spelling Harcourt Spelling program –15 words a week (reading phonogram focus) –first 200 high frequency words –“Cloze” tests and dictated sentences on Fridays

Writing Workshop Six Trait Writing Model for instruction and assessment: (taught by using students’ writing as models, through literature, class practice, student practice and sample work) –Ideas –Organization –Word Choice –Sentence Fluency –Voice –Conventions

Science & Social Studies Science Most activities are hands-on and student centered. Covering these topics: –Science process skills –Earth & Rocks –Matter & Energy –Living Things Social Studies Will use a textbook, related news stories, and other related resources Covering these topics: –Communities here and in the world –Economics –Government/Civics

Language Arts Block Harcourt Reading Program –A research based Core Reading Program which uses an anthology of stories to cover the BIG FIVE 1.Phonics 2.Phonemic awareness 3.Vocabulary 4.Comprehension 5.Fluency Students work in different groupings –Whole class –Instructional Focus Groups –Independently

Technology Taught in conjunction with other subject areas –Computer Lab once a week –Daily use of projector and 5 laptops

Leader Board Outstanding, Great, Good, Ready to Learn –Students can move up and down on the chart throughout the day Class Stars are earned by: –Working together –Zero noise in hallways –Compliments from others

Misbehavior 1 st time: verbal reminder of expectation 2 nd time: “clip down” to yellow Think About It = student thinks about their actions and can clip up as behavior warrants 3 rd time: “clip down” to orange Teacher Choice = teacher decides what the loss of privilege will be after conferring with the student 4 th time: “clip down” to red Parent Contact = I will make contact with you via email, phone call, or note.

Snack & Water Bottles Encouraged to bring in healthy snacks: –“Raw from the Vine” –Or 5 & 15 Rule ( 5 or fewer grams of fat and 15 or less grams of sugar) apples, bananas, melon, berries, etc. carrots, celery, snap peas, edamame nuts, pretzels, whole grain crackers Encouraged to bring in water bottles: –kept at the sink –refill each day at home
