4. Correct! This is a statue of Buddha. Buddha was a philosopher/founder of the religion of Buddhism. Many people rub the laughing Buddha’s belly for luck and prosperity. The largest outdoor Buddha statue is located in Hong Kong at the Po Lin Monastery and symbolizes the impact of Buddhism as a center for their beliefs. It is visible at great distances and is also a tourist attraction.

6. If you said a temple or place of worship, you are correct! Angkor Wat is a series of temples and towers that covers 203 acres. Built in the 1100’s, it was first used for Hindu worship and today is used for Buddhist worship. Located in Cambodia, this serves as a spiritual center as well as a tourist attraction.

8. If you said the Dalai Lama, you are correct! He is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists. He is believed to be the reincarnation of the long line of “Buddhist Masters” who choose to come back to earth to teach about human values such as compassion, forgiveness and tolerance. He is currently in exile as Tibet is under the control of the Communist government. China

10. If you said Confucius, you are right! Confucius was a philosopher and reformer who lived in China from 551 B.C. to 479 B.C. His sayings instructed Chinese to live with good morals/values and political responsibilities. His philosophy became a religion and many of its ideas (such as respect) are similar to other religions like Christianity and Islam.

12. Did you say gates? These are called Torii Gates and are an important type of architectural element used in Japan. In the religion of Shinto, practiced in Japan, the gates serve as symbolic entries to the spiritual world. In Shinto, they believe in spirits and demons living in nature. These gates represent that connection in their everyday life. Directions: - Sketch a Torii Gate in your notebook. - Label it Shinto and explain its significance.

14. Directions - Chart Once you create your chart it is time to complete it. Have each member of your group choose one religion. Send one student to pick up a handout for each religion from the table by my desk. –Kid A  Buddhism –Kid B  Shinto –Kid C  Confucianism Each student should complete one of the religions individually. After you finish, take turns TEACHING your religion to the other members of your group.
