SCIENTIFIC LAB REPORT TITLE OF EXPERIMENT: HOW LIGHT WORKS TEAM MEMBERS: ALICIA AND MELISS

AIM: TO OBSERVE HOW FAR LIGHT TRAVELS WHEN REFLECTED AGAINST A MIRROR AT DIFFERENT ANGLES FROM THE TABLE IN FRONT OF THE LIGHT SOURCE.

HYPOTHESIS/PREDICTION: HOW FAR DOES LIGHT TRAVEL WHEN IT IS REFLECTED AGAINST A MIRROR AT DIFFERENT ANGLES IN FRONT OF THE LIGHT SOURCE? I THINK THE MIRRORS’ REFLECTIONS WILL BE SHORTER WHEN THE ANGLE IS SMALL AND BIGGER WHEN THE ANGLE IS LARGE.

MATERIALS: LIGHT SOURCE (LIGHT BULB) MIRROR RULER DARK ROOM Dark Room

METHOD: 1.PLACE THE LIGHT SOURCE (BULB) IN A DARK ROOM 2.PLACE THE MIRROR FACING THE LIGHT WITH THE TOP OF THE MIRROR 2CM HIGH 3.MEASURE HOW FAR THE LIGHT REFLECTS 4.REPEAT, PLACING THE MIRROR 2CM HIGHER EVERY TIME

OBSERVATIONS: How tall the angle is between the mirror and the table How far the light reflected 2cm6.5cm 4cm9.5cm 6cm22cm Mirror Ruler Light Source

DISCUSSION: HOW FAR DOES LIGHT TRAVEL WHEN IT IS REFLECTED AGAINST A MIRROR AT DIFFERENT ANGLES IN FRONT OF THE LIGHT SOURCE? IN OUR EXPERIMENT WE FOUND OUT THAT THE LIGHT TRAVELLED FURTHER WHEN THE ANGLE IS LARGER BETWEEN THE TABLE AND THE MIRROR AND WHEN THE ANGLE WAS SMALLER THE REFLECTION WAS SHORTER. LIGHT IS KNOWN TO BEHAVE IN A PREDICTABLE WAY. WHEN OBSERVING LIGHT, APPROACHING AND REFLECTING OFF OF A FLAT MIRROR, HOW THE LIGHT REFLECTS WOULD FOLLOW A LAW KNOWN AS THE LAW OF REFLECTION. THE DIAGRAM BELOW SHOWS THE LAW OF REFLECTION.

DISCUSSION: (CONTINUED) THE DIAGRAM BELOW SHOWS THE LAW OF REFLECTION. MIRRORS REFLECT LIGHT BECAUSE IT IS DIFFICULT IT IS FOR LIGHT TO TRAVEL THROUGH THE MATERIAL THAT THE MIRROR IS MADE OF. A VERY COMMON MIRROR MATERIALS IS HIGHLY-POLISHED SILVER. YOU CAN SEE HOW THIS HAPPENS IN OUR EXPERIMENT WHEN WE PLACE THE MIRROR DOWN IN FRONT OF THE LIGHT SOURCE IT WILL REFLECT THE LIGHT.

CONCLUSION: I FOUND OUT THAT MY PREDICTION WAS CORRECT WHEN I SAID THAT THE LIGHT WILL REFLECT FURTHER WHEN THE MIRROR IS HIGHER. THE LENGTH OF THE LIGHT WAS ABOUT TRIPLE THE HEIGHT OF THE MIRROR IN THE FIRST TEST. IN THE SECOND TEST IT WAS ONLY TWICE THE HEIGHT OF THE MIRROR. IN THE THIRD TEST IS WAS ALMOST 4 TIMES THE HEIGHT OF THE MIRROR. I FOUND THESE RESULTS QUIET SURPRISING. NEXT TIME WE WILL PLACE THE MIRROR FURTHER AWAY AND SEE IF THE RESULTS ARE SIMILAR OR COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
