He was the highest ranking officer to resign from the US Army when his state (Virginia) seceded He became a Confederate General He helped lead Confederates to victory at the Battle of 1 st Bull Run Johnston commanded Confederate forces during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign before being wounded and replaced by Robert E. Lee After recovering from his wounds, he was given command of the Confederacy’s western armies At the Battle of Atlanta (1864), the Union Army defeats the Confederate Army led by Johnston On April 17, 1865 Johnston will surrender one of the last CSA armies to Union General William T.
