Teaching the Lesson I begin this lesson by showing examples. I point out how a negative shape (space) can be just as important as a positive shape. Then, I demonstrate how one cannot make a flat circle unless the strip is cut. I cut the strip. It becomes a broken line. The broken line is arranged in a circle. I point out the “space”, the negative shape inside the broken line. I demonstrate how one can arrange these strips to make patterns. I begin this lesson by showing examples. Easy Lesson Third grade does not usually have any trouble gluing the 1/2” strips. I suggest that they cut and arrange the strips before gluing. Most students like to glue as they arrange the strips on the white background. Some students even cut some of the strips thinner (lengthwise).
