Key Concepts Coordination and Subordination Combining choppy sentences Ineffective Use of Coordination and Subordination Avoid subordinating excessively
3
Coordination Draws attention to two or more ideas (112) Join words or phrases with: –Coordinating/Correlative conjunctions –Commas –Semicolons I write e-mails often; therefore, a letter will not be sent.
4
Subordination To give unequal emphasis to two or more ideas (113) Major ideas are in an independent clause while minor ideas are in subordinate clauses or phrases Since I am writing so many e-mails, letters will not be sent.
5
Combining Choppy Sentences (113-114) Short sentences can add emphasis when used correctly and sparingly –Although too many of them make your writing sound choppy Minor ideas can be combined using coordination and subordination I wrote an e-mail. Letters are old-fashioned. E-mails are fast.
6
Ineffective Use of Coordination and Subordination (115) Coordination –Use only when ideas are equally important –One idea is more important than the other, subordinate Three days went by, and I still hadn’t received a letter, but that’s okay I did receive an e-mail. Subordination –Don’t bury major ideas with subordination –Only use this style with minor ideas My uncle knew the e-mail had arrived and told me the letter would not arrive in time.
7
Avoid Subordinating Excessively (116) Combining too many choppy sentences into a run-on sentence Dividing the sentence can help reconstruct the minor ideas I wrote the letter three days ago, and I still haven’t received a letter back, but I did receive an e-mail, in which talked about my friends day.
