ALEKS PPL Mathematics Placement Improvement Boot Camp Beth Barnett, T. J. Duda, Julie Hallas, Lauren Jones, and Phil MacLean

What

Internet-based adaptive software from McGraw Hill Software licenses ($25 per student) were paid for by a Student Success Grant Students take an initial placement with up to 30 questions Students work on customized online remediation modules for at least 10 hours 8 of those hours were with available guidance from a mathematics instructor Students had to work on ALEKS PPL for at least 2 additional hours outside of the Boot Camp setting Students took a second placement through ALEKS PPL, and several returned to take a third, fourth, or even fifth placement test, provided they spent at least 10 hours remediating between each test

Why ALEKS PPL was first recommended by the Math Placement Committee in 2013 Compass results are inadequate and not known to be a good predictor of student success Student Success Innovation Fund supported the summer pilot

Where/ When Six two-hour meetings per session Three-week sessions in July Two-week session in August Last-minute re-placement opportunities the week before school began

How

Final ALEKS vs. Compass/ ACT Advanced at least one course over Compass/ ACT placement Placement level unchanged

Final ALEKS vs. Compass/ ACT

Results 185 credit hours = $25,147 saved in tuition alone Cost savings measured assuming students took the traditional sequence: 0114, 1050, 1075 in a traditional, blended, or web format

Just in tuition dollars... $838 saved per student who advanced placement

Other notes: After implementation of ALEKS PPL at Kent State: Success rates for college-level mathematics courses have improved by about 5% Enrollment in College Algebra increased by 20% Graduation rates from remediation have increased by about 25%

Next steps Met team goals Eager to implement ALEKS PPL College-wide
