2) Spain establishes sugar cane plantations across the Canary Islands. 3) Spain acquires African slaves from nearby Ivory Coast 4) Spain expands their Sugar/ Slave Plantation economy to the newly discovered Caribbean Islands

B) Spain established trading posts along Africa’s Ivory Coast. 1) Offer to exchange guns and alcohol in exchange for captured slaves.

C) Spain exploits the competition between the local tribes. 1) Tribes victorious in war would often enslave the losers.

2) African tribes get caught in an arms race. a) A tribe in Africa need guns to fight off tribes trying to enslave them b) In order to get guns, the tribes had to trade slaves to the Spanish

D) Between 1492 and 1770, more Africans than Europeans came to America 1) 10 million Africans were abducted during the slave trade years 2) Abducted- kidnapped

E) The majority of the Africans went to Brazil and the Caribbean Islands to work the sugar plantations. 1) About 6% of the slaves will be sent to the 13 Colonies
