A Girl Who Always Did Her Best pg. 42 2 worlds in British- American colonies 1 st - Rough-&-tumble frontier, classless, & judged on what can do, not who their family was 2 nd - Orderly, society of rank & class Large landowners, merchants, craftspeople, farmers, indentured servants, & slaves Both areas had independent-minded ppl. Eliza Lucas came from a wealthy plantation & was born on the island of Antigua (e. of Puerto Rico) Lucas’ father was a British military officer & he sent her to school in Eng., & this was the best gift he could give her Eliza (16)-Her family moved to SC, her dad fought in Jenkins’ Ear, her mother was sick, & she was in charge

A Girl Always Did Her Best pg. 43 Lucas-Skilled musician, spoke many languages, gifted thinker Lucas-Scientific mind, experimented, & studied, & loved agriculture/plant life Lucas planted fig orchards to sell the crops abroad to bring in $ to the colonies even though most ppl. grew rice Experimented w/ alfalfa, cotton, flax, ginger, hemp, indigo, & silk Lucas grew the 1 st successful indigo crop in the colonies & 1747 SC was exporting 100,000 lbs. of indigo/yr. Indigo crop & rice were most valuable to England Took care of plantation business, tutored sister & 2 African girls (teach other slave children), & wrote letters Spare time- Learned about the law, helped to deal w/real estate contracts, & helped write wills
