Lindsey Peele

 Turn to page 11 in your interactive notebook and answer the following questions:  1. What is the difference between an element and a compound?  2. How can elements be organized on the periodic table?  3. What is the difference between a proton, neutron, and an electron?  4. How do you calculate atomic mass?  Start reading QUIETLY in your science book Unit D p. 9

 Atoms are composed of 3 types of particles: ◦ Proton ◦ Electron ◦ Neutron  Combination of protons and neutrons is the nucleus ◦ This is also how you calculate atomic mass ◦ Number of protons + Number of neutrons

 Mass Number – Atomic Number

 Atomic Number- The identity of an atom is determined by the number of protons in the nucleus  Atomic Mass Number- Total number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus

 Atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons  Example: Chlorine  How to find the number of neutrons in an atom ◦ Atomic Mass Number – Atomic Number

 An atom ALWAYS has an equal number of protons and electrons. ◦ Because one electron has a negative charge, and one proton has a positive charge, they cancel each other out.  An ion is formed when an atom loses or gains one of more electrons.

 WHEN AN ATOM BECOMES AN ION, THE ELECTRON NUMBER AND THE PROTON NUMBER ARE DIFFERENT  Ions have an overall electric charge

 Formation of positive ion  Formation of negative ion

 Partner with only 1 other person  Write this under your ice breaker  Calculate the following for the number of neutrons ◦ Sodium ◦ Hydrogen ◦ Zinc ◦ Potassium (K) ◦ Phosphorus

 Read the paragraph about Mendeleev’s Periodic Table  Predicting New Elements  Reading the Periodic Table  Groups and Periods

 Write 10 test questions about this information after reading it

 After reading this information, pick 5 different elements, draw them out, and explain the different parts of the element square
