1 Student Progress Monitoring in Physical Education
Chelsea Butler

2 Student progress monitoring is a practice that helps teachers use student performance data to continually evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching and make informed decisions. Self monitoring has been effective in increasing more appropriate behaviors, increasing on-task behavior in the classroom, boosting completion of assignments, improving both academic and social skills, and reducing disruptive behavior. Student progress monitoring (spm) data offers you with reliable feedback on your students progress. For those students who are succeeding, the SPM graphs show the effectiveness of your instruction. The graphs not only show you performance levels, they show you whether students you are monitoring are making enough progress to be successful thoughout the year.

3 Intergrading SPM into your classroom
Make data collection and graphing a routine part of the class routine. Student selects and define their goal (with teacher if needed) Have students record their scores/progress/frequent issues Teach students how to read their graphs and how to self-evaluate

4 Methods in determining if student progress is adequate
FOUR POINT RULE The teacher looks at the four most recent data points. If all four points are above the goal line, the goal should be raised. If all four points are below the goal line, the teacher should adjust the students instructional program.

5 Cont’d Trend-line rule -teacher calculates the trend-line slope using the most recent eight data points. If this slope is steeper than the goal line slope, the goal should be raised. If the trend-line slope is flatter than the goal-line slope, instruction should be adjusted

6 Making SPM most effective
Use strategies constantly at first and fade to less frequent for students to be held more accountable Ensure students have learning behaviors that you want tem to perform as they're self- assessing Self-monitoring needs to be combined with methods that allow students to evaluate themselves against previous performances

7 Tracking ideas for your PE classroom
Use checklists for each skill so students can see what they are expected to do to master it. Use visual charts for units so students can map progress -for example: During a basketball unit (elementary level), each student will receive a puzzle piece that eventually makes a basketball. Each piece is given to a student when they master a skill i.e. passing.

8 Cont’d -Middle school level: Using the fitnessgram, hand out the sheet where expected goals are stated for each gender and age. Have students set goals to work towards the level needed and map progress on a chart. - High School: Use heart monitors to individualize student achievement during training. Have each student chart their target heart range during each activity and compare them to their goals.
