Killer Landslide in Washington
2
8 people are confirmed dead and more than a dozen people are still unaccounted for after a huge landslide struck in the town of Oso in Washington State. The landslide, which encompassed about one square mile, struck on Saturday and was caused by groundwater saturation tied to heavy rainfall in the area over the past month. Rescue crews are working both sides of the landslide and authorities are also using helicopters to try to identify heat signatures, or people who may have been able to get free. And although the operation remains an "active rescue," not a recovery effort, the work is extremely slow and difficult because the area is highly unstable. The mud flow is like quicksand and is reported to be 15 feet deep in some places. On Saturday rescuers dug through the rubble while survivors were crying for help underneath the debris. Rescuers heard voices and tried to reach the possible survivor or survivors, but "the mud was too thick and deep." Residents were warned of increased problems as more rain is expected today.

In Other News U.S. aircraft join the pursuit of rebel leader, Joseph Kony, who has spent years plundering villages, mutilating civilians and kidnapping children across large swaths of Central Africa. Military aircraft are for the first time to join an enlarged U.S. special-operations force in Uganda as President Barack Obama ramps up efforts to hunt down this notorious warlord. U.S. Coast Guard officials said as much as 168,000 gallons of oil might have spilled from a barge in Galveston Bay in Texas, blocking the busy Houston Ship Channel and threatening birds at a nearby wildlife sanctuary. Officials said that the location of the spill is what has become the main issue, rather than the amount of oil released into the ocean. Since it is blocking the busy ship channel located near environmentally sensitive areas, it is having an economic and environmental impact. The spill occurred on Sunday after the barge carrying 900,000 gallons of oil collided with a passing ship. Crews were skimming oil and laying absorbent booms to contain the spread of the spill, which occurred in the channel that runs between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. Containing the spill is likely to take days. Michigan has become the latest state to allow same-sex marriage after a U.S. federal judge has struck down a ban on gay marriage in the state. Two Detroit-area nurses successfully argued that the ban violated their rights under the US constitution. One local official said she would start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Monday, but the state is planning to lodge an appeal. The judge stated in his decision that he understands many residents have religious convictions that form their own viewpoints of marriage, but these views cannot strip other citizens of their guarantees of equal protections under the law. A court in Egypt has sentenced to death 529 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. They were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property. Authorities have cracked down harshly on Islamists since Morsi was removed by the military in July. Hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested. They are expected to appeal. While death sentences are often handed down in Egypt, few have been carried out in recent years.
