5 Resolved Conflict Native Americans: ■ Forced out of their homelands ■ Moved west of the Mississippi ■ Wars between Natives and Settlers ■ Dawes Act of 1887 Mormons: ■ Faced serious persecution in states of New York, Illinois and Missouri ■ Tar and feather or severely beaten ■ Traveled west to avoid persecution

7 Reading Purpose: To understand the changes of life for Native Americans Strategy: “Notice and Note” Create a list detailing how the Natives were to live on land promised to them

8 Vocabulary ■ You will be given a vocabulary word. ■ You will need to define the word in your own words without looking up the definition. ■ You will ask three other people what they believed the word will be. (30 seconds each) ■ You will sit back down when you talked to 3 students. Look at what each student had to say then using your phone write down the correct definition. ■ Your will go back to those same 3 people and tell them the correct definition to write down
