Key Questions, and Notes Toward A Discussion of Tragedy MacBeth
2
Why Key Questions? Reminder: The nice thing about a good question, and some critical language is that the combination of the two allow writers to filter information, and focus a discussion…something that we will eventually have to do.
3
Key Questions We’ll Be Answering How does the nature of tragedy shift from Macbeth (as representative of the Elizabethan world) to Batman Returns (as representative of the Post Modern World)? And then what does this indicatae about each respective society? As a critical framework we’ll start with the idea of tragedy, i.e. as per the key terms that we have discussed so far: the tragic hero, hamartia, hubris, catharsis. We’ll ultimately come back to the movie and discuss how these terms show up in the movie, how the film configures or “distributes” the heroic, the hamartic, the hubraic, and catharsis.

Filtering Questions (Good For Making Notes) Where and how do The Tragic Hero, Hubris, Hamartia, and Catharsis appear in MacBeth. You will ultimately be able to bring your notes to the summative, you will not be able to bring any other materials (including the play).
