1 Today we will be learning about Metric Units of Length
Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Metric Units of Length Let’s warm up : 1) How many inches are in 4 feet? 1) 48 inches 2) How many feet is 60 inches? 2) 5 feet 3) 12 quarts 3) How many Quarts is 3 gallons? 4) How many Pounds is 7 tons? 4) 14,000 tons CONFIDENTIAL

2 Let’s review what we did in the previous chapter
CONVERT: Change from one unit to another, such as from feet to inches. Change Larger to Smaller units To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many inches are in 6 feet? 12 inches = 1 foot 6 feet = 6 x 12 = 72 inches Change Smaller to Larger units To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many feet is 48 inches? 1 foot = 12 inches 48 inches = 48 ÷ 12 = 4 feet CONFIDENTIAL

3 Simple Conversion Tables
Review Simple Conversion Tables Inches Feet Yards 12 1 24 2 36 3 48 4 60 5 72 6 84 7 96 8 108 9 Feet Yards Miles 5,280 1,760 1 10,560 3,520 2 15,840 3 CONFIDENTIAL

4 Simple Conversion Tables
Review Simple Conversion Tables Cups Pints Quarts Gallons 2 1 4 6 3 8 10 5 12 14 7 16 Ounces Cups Pounds 8 1 16 2 24 3 32 4 40 5 48 6 CONFIDENTIAL

5 Convert Gallons to Quarts
Review Convert Gallons to Quarts To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many Quarts is 4 gallons? We are given, 4 gallons = __ quarts 4 x 4 = 16 4 gallons = 16 quarts 4 gallons is equal to 16 quarts. CONFIDENTIAL

6 Convert Ounces to Pounds
Review Convert Ounces to Pounds To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many Pounds is 560 ounces? We are given, 560 ounces = __ Pounds 560 ÷ 16 = 35 560 ounces = 35 Pounds 560 ounces is equal to 35 Pounds . CONFIDENTIAL

7 Convert tons to pounds Review To change to a smaller unit, multiply.
Example: How many Pounds is 2 tons? We are given, 2 tons = __ pounds 2 x 2,000 = 4,000 2 tons = 4,000 pounds 2 tons is equal to 4,000 pounds. CONFIDENTIAL

8 Today we will learn about the
Metric Units of Length Centimeters (cm), millimeters (mm), decimeters (dm), and kilometers (km) are used to measure length in the metric system. 1 cm 1 mm 1 dm CONFIDENTIAL

9 Simple Conversion Tables Metric Units of Length
10 millimeters (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm) 10 centimeters (cm) = 1 decimeter (dm) 100 centimeters = 1 meter (m) 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer (km) CONFIDENTIAL

10 Convert meters to millimeters
To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many millimeters is 4 meters? We are given, 4 meter = __ millimeter 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 meter = 4,000 millimeter 4 meter is equal to 4,000 millimeter . CONFIDENTIAL

11 Convert centimeters to meters
To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many meters is 500 centimeters ? We are given, 500 centimeters = __ meters 500 ÷ 100 = 5 500 centimeters = 5 meters 500 centimeters is equal to 5 meters . CONFIDENTIAL

12 Convert kilometers to meters
To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many meters is 4 kilometers? We are given, 4 kilometers = __ meters 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 kilometers = 4,000 meters 4 kilometer is equal to 4,000 meter . CONFIDENTIAL

13 ESTIMATE: An answer that is close to the exact answer.
Estimate Estimate is used to get an idea of how large the object is; to pick appropriate units. CONFIDENTIAL

14 Estimate and measure length
To estimate and measure length of an object: Use a centimeter ruler, meter stick or tape measure to measure objects. Choose the appropriate Metric unit. Estimate the length to the nearest unit with the help of the mark closest to the end of the object. CONFIDENTIAL

15 Estimate length of 478 centimeters in meters
478 centimeters closest to 500 centimeters. 500 centimeters = 500 ÷ 100 meters = 5 meters So, the estimated length of 478 centimeters is 5 meters. CONFIDENTIAL
