1 SPIDERS OF CALIFORNIA NAME: Celia Bandelier CLASS: High Tech Learning TEACHER: Professor Lamb DATE: November 8, 2008

2 Trapdoor Spider Size:2.5 cm long Description: The Trapdoor spider is a large, hairy, harmless and tropical. Habitat: They make long burrows in the earth, line them with silk, which they spin, and fashion at the entrance a bevel-edged, hinged, accurately fitting trapdoor often made of alternate layers of earth and silk. The upper surface of the door may be covered with earth or gravel, thus disguising the entrance. A species common in the southwestern United States digs holes about 2.5 cm (about 1 in) in diameter and sometimes 30 cm (12 in) in length. Interesting fact: The nests of trap-door spiders are generally in groups. The young hatch in the burrows of their mothers and live there for a few weeks; they then leave the nest and begin small underground burrows of their own. Trap-door spiders subsist largely on ants and other insects. Picture of Spider

3 Jumping Spiders Size: less than 2 cm or 0.8 inch Description: They are among the most ornate of spiders; many species are brightly colored and strikingly patterned, with stout bodies, short legs, and a very large pair of eyes on the front of the face. Habitat: The jumping spider is typically found in tropic regions. They can be found anywhere in these climates, if its day the spider can be found on the ground, on rocks, in the grass, or on trees. At night or if it is raining, the jumping spider will hide under rocks or a small web. Interesting fact: The jumping spider is an active predator, usually hunting during daylight. It will stalk to within a few body lengths of the prey, crouch, crawl slowly forward, and then lift its front legs and pounce. It accomplishes its spectacular jumps by means of muscular contractions in the body that force body fluids into the legs, causing the legs to extend rapidly. Picture of Spider
