Mountains & Seas (especially the Aegean Sea) helped shape the history of Greece They sailed on the seas to far off places to establish colonies. The mountains kept people apart so that each city-state had its own ruler, laws, & money.

The rocky soil made farming hard. They couldn’t grow much food. They raised sheep, goats, pigs, & cattle.They grew grain, grapes, & olives.

Every free Adult Male over 20 was a citizen in Athens. Women did not participate in government. All decisions were made by majority rule. Athens became the world’s 1st Democracy because they believed people should rule themselves.

The Olympic Games began in 776 BC. The Olympic Games brought together the city-states in one place. Things all Greeks had in Common All the Greeks believed that Zeus & their other gods controlled daily events in the world. They met every four years to honor Zeus. All the city-states shared a common written language.

Greek amphitheatres, such as this one in Delphi, were designed so that even a whisper could reach the seats farthest from the stage.
