Power in Pairs An investigation into how muscles work together
2
Step #1 Seated partner: Place his/her hands under the edge of the table Apply gentle upward pressure Standing partner: Feel the front and back of the person’s arm (bicep/ triceps) 1. Write down how your partner’s bicep and tricep felt when pushing up in a complete sentence.
3
Step #2 Seated partner: Put hands on top of the table and push downward Standing partner: Feel the front and back of your partner’s arm (bicep/ triceps) 2. How did your partner’s bicep and tricep feel when pushing down?
4
Step #3 Switch positions and repeat steps 1 and 2
5
Step #1 (after partners switch) Seated partner: Place his/her hands under the edge of the table Apply gentle upward pressure Standing partner: Feel the front and back of the person’s arm (bicep/ triceps)
6
Step #2 (after partners switch) Seated partner: Put hands on top of the table and push downward Standing partner: Feel the front and back of your partner’s arm (bicep/ triceps) 3. Based on these observations, how do you think the muscles in your arm work?

Answer the following questions in your science notebook 1. Write down how your partner’s bicep and tricep felt when pushing up in a complete sentence. 2. Write down how your partner’s bicep and tricep felt when pushing down in a complete sentence. 3. Based on these observations, how do you think the muscles in your arm work?
8
Do we have to tell our muscles to work??? Voluntary: Choose for it to happen or under your control Involuntary: It happens without you choosing or thinking about it
9
3 Types of Muscle Cardiac muscle: Found only in the heart Function = pumps blood through the body Involuntary (works without your control)
10
3 Types of Muscle Skeletal muscle: Attached to skeleton Function = moves bones Voluntary (under your control)
11
3 Types of Muscle Smooth muscle: Found in blood vessels and parts of the digestive system Function = moves food and blood Involuntary (works without your control)
12
Where are muscles found? 1. Draw a person (NO STICK PEOPLE). 2. Label at least 3 parts that are made of skeletal muscle (Label part and type of muscle) 3. Label at least 3 parts that are made of smooth muscle (Label part and type of muscle) 4. Draw and label where cardiac muscle is found (Label part and type of muscle) 5. Write a short paragraph explaining what you drew. ***There should be at least 7 muscles labeled
