1 Introduction to ANU Services Ursula Hall – New Residents (2016)

2 Your Student ID  Every ANU Student has a unique ID number which is assigned when you become a student.  The format of the ID number is: u1234567  When you enrol at Manning Clark you will receive a Student Card:  “Your ANU Student Card is your official form of identification on campus. This card must be carried at all times when you are on campus, and must be provided upon request to ANU staff and security officers.”  Provides building access, library loans, student ID (off-campus concessions), etc.

3 HR and Student Administration (ISIS)  ISIS is the ANU’s Online Student Admin portal  Used for:  Course Enrolment  Personal Details (emergency contacts)  Accessing course results & academic record  Fee Payment/HECS/etc.  Other functions essential to your university career You can access ISIS at: http://isis.anu.edu.au

4 ANU Email  All students have an email account created based on their student number.  For example: u4516050@anu.edu.au  This student email address is the university’s primary contact point for students. You MUST check this email regularly.  There are facilities to “drop” mail from this account to your own personal account (Gmail, etc) or access via Outlook/Thunderbird/etc. You can access your mail at: http://anumail.anu.edu.au

5 Home Directory/Pebble  All ANU Students have access to 250MB of personal storage on the university’s secure file storage platform.  This can be accessed from any ANU computer on campus. It can also be access from your personal computer or from off-campus using the Pebble Web Service You can learn more at: http://pebble.anu.edu.au

6 Printing  The ANU provides printing facilities in most computer labs across the campus. These facilities provide an cheap and fast way of printing large volumes (such as lecture handouts, tutorial sheets and other study- related resources).  At the beginning of each semester, each student receives a $44 printing quota. This is equivalent to about 400 single-side A4 black-and-white pages.  TIP: Use two-UP/four-UP printing to save your print quota – instructions are provided in the computer labs  There are also special printers in the libraries that are capable of printing A3/colour/scanning/copying

7 Wireless  Most of the ANU Campus receives wireless connectivity and access to the ANU network  You will need a compatible operating system/device and a university ID & password to log onto the network  Networks are ‘ANU Secure’ for campus and ‘Resnet’ for residences Plenty of guides and information can be found at: http://wireless.anu.edu.au

8 WATTLE  Online “Learning Management System” for all ANU Students  Provides access to:  Lecture Slides  Lecture Recordings (!!!) Lecture Recordings (!!!)  Course Information Course Information  Assignment Submission & Marks  Discussion Forums/Tutorial Enrolment Discussion Forums/Tutorial Enrolment Log into wattle at: http://wattle.anu.edu.au TIP: Some schools still use legacy systems for certain activities (i.e. StReAMS, WebCT, CBE). Your Course Administrator/Lecturer will advise you if this is the case

9 Timetable  Lecture, Tutorial and Examination timetables are available from the ANU Timetabling & Information Centre  Goes through several draft stages so that students and staff can report clashes.  Check regularly as this can often change (even as late as Week 2/3!) 10 Lecturers & Attendance  Depending on your program, study load and choice of courses your number of contact hours will differ.  Contact hours can take the form of lectures, tutorial sessions, labs, field trips, seminars, etc.  Different schools/colleges have different policies regarding attendance to lectures, tutorials, labs, etc.  Furthermore, not all lecturers obey the policies of their respective schools when it comes to attendance and lecture recordings.  TIP: Read the Course Outline and check your lecturer at the end of the first lecture to make sure you understand the requirements of attendance for your course.

11 Libraries  The university has 9 library facilities. Each have different opening hours, but most are open from 8.30am until early evening (Chifley Level 2 is open 24 hours).  Extensive catalogue of materials all searchable online as well as access to leading article databases.  Undergraduates can borrow 15 books at a time for 4 weeks. (remember to take your student card!)  Speak to “AskANU Consultants” or attend a library discovery session in weeks 1 & 2 to learn more. Find more at: http://library.anu.edu.au

12 Textbooks  Prescribed/Recommended texts are in your Course Outline (on Wattle)  Textbooks are an essential part of your learning but are notoriously EXPENSIVE and sometimes recommended texts are rarely used. Speak to the lecturer or previous students.  The libraries usually hold copies of course textbooks on reserve or 2-day loan – make use of these where possible.  There is a Coop Bookshop on campus which sells new textbooks. Check/order online to avoid the rush!  If you can wait a week or two, Book Depository has free international delivery and competitive prices.  Second-hand textbooks can be purchased at the ANUSA offices in Union Court or from ANU Classifieds.

13 Classifieds  ANU offers a free Classifieds Section on their website  Use this to search for 2 nd -hand textbooks, white goods, automobiles, electronics, etc.  If you want it, chances are another student is selling it!  TIP: There are also many ‘Buy and Sell’ groups on Facebook Find more at: http://billboard.anu.edu.au/classifieds.asp

14 ANUTV  Many (but not all) wired connection points across the ANU network can access ANUTV on their own computer.  The ANU provides 14 local digital TV channels (including HD services) and an extensive selection of Satellite and international channels.  The ANU has also been granted permission for you to record from these channels for education purposes.  These facilities should now be available throughout Ursula Hall when using the LAN access. 15 Academic Skills  The Academic Skills & Learning Centre (ASLC) offers students help with a variety of strategies to adjust to university level work  The ASLC offers free services such as:  Individual consultations (academic skills) Individual consultations (academic skills)  Workshops/courses  Plenty of materials (handouts and publications), podcasts, etc.  The Ursula Hall Academic Mentoring program can also assist you with subject area-specific problems Find more at: http://academicskills.anu.edu.au

16 Ursies & Yogi website  There are two websites at Ursula Hall:  http://ursula.anu.edu.au is the ANU Ursula Hall page and includes information about living at the hall, fees and contact details  http://yogi.anu.edu.au is a new international website run by the Ursies Residents Committee and will contain lots of information about Ursies events including a calendar, event details and the Newsletter.  The Yogi website also has links to the important facilities mentioned in this presentation. 17 Accommodation Portal  You will likely only need to use the Accommodation Portal once or twice per year but it is incredibly important that you know where it is!  Mostly used to facilitate residence applications, transfers and reapplications at the end of each year.  Also allows you to pay for phone credit in your room using a credit card.  Note: This service uses a 6 digit number and different password to your University ID. 19 International Students Proof of Age cards  Australia has strict alcohol policies and licensed venues in the ACT will require you to produce identification as proof of age before being admitted or served.  An ACT “Proof of Age card” is valid photo ID throughout Australia and can be acquired for $5.00 from the Civic Library.  You will need: - Original copy of Passport and secondary identification (student card) - A “Proof of Residency” letter to be collected from the Ursies office We will make a trip to Civic Library during O-Week
