NATO

Purpose NATO was formed because of a collective fear of the spread of communism exhibited by Europe and the U.S. The purpose of the organization was to create a unified force. If one country that was a part of NATO was struck, it would counterattack, it’s strength augmented by the rest of the NATO organization. Power NATO was most powerful during the Cold War, when it was created and first put into effect. It created a unified body of like- minded individuals that did not pursue conquest, rather the protection of those involved. Given the way that Russia had been moving through Eurasia and converting countries to communism, this unity created a sense of safety. Location NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This is obviously because, as the name states, it was located in the Northern portion of the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas, spanning all of the US and Canada as well as a very large portion of Europe. Controversy NATO, though a grand idea, was not immediately accepted by all that were to be involved. For instance, France did not feel it was getting it’s fair share of power, which led to Charles de Gaulle (the acting president of France at the time) demanding they be put on equal footing with power players like the US. He did not get what he was looking for, so France left NATO for a short time. De Gaulle banned US weapons from French soil, and pursued a means of forming a separate deterrent force. During this period of time, France detonated it’s first nuclear bomb, Gerboise Bleue (Blue Jerboa). This is the most powerful first test A-Bomb. France rejoined NATO in ’93.
