Definitions Self-employed: people who are not employees since they work for themselves. Employer: is a person or a company that hires one or more people. Employee: is a person who works for a company or person. Pay Equity: in economics, the principle that men and women should be compensated equally for work requiring comparable skills, responsibilities, and effort. Job Security: is the relative probability that an individual will keep his or her job. Commonly it is the feeling you have that your job is secure and will continue.

Key Aspects: Finding a Job Job advertisements All potential employees are protected from discrimination when applying for a job under provincial human rights codes. Prohibited grounds of discrimination include: Sex Sexual orientation Age Religion Race Record of offences Family status Marital status Disability Color Place of origin Ethnic origin ancestry Citizenship Job application forms and interviews An application form can ask whether a person belongs to a discriminated group for the purposes of an affirmative action policy. The only way it can be used is if is the applicant has a choice to put it down. For example a job form may ask if you are aboriginal.

Key Aspects: Minimum terms of Employment Wages Employment standards / minimum wage legislation sets a minimum hourly wage for workers. Some provinces have rates for 16 and 18. Pay Equity Requires employers to identify and correct gender discrimination that may be present in their pay practices (to adjust the wages of employees in female job classes to equal those in male job classes) Hours Of Work Employment standers legislation sets out a standard work week. (37.5hours - a standard work day is 7.5 hours.) Rest And Meal Breaks Every province (except NB and NS) requires that an employee get at least a 30 minute rest break for every five hours of work. Everywhere (except PEI) requires a one day break between a 7 day week

The Common Law Employment Contract Term or Permanent In a permanent position the employee has work unless fired or laid off In a term position the work is only for a specified period of time Probation Many new employees start with a period of probation to see if the job works for them. In this period, they can be fired without notice and they do not get job security

Questions Is it right for workers between the ages of 16 to 18 to be paid less? Should workplaces pay for break time? Is it still true that men are paid more in certain job positions?
