link in a food chain represent a feeding step in the transfer of energy and matter in an ecosystem.
2
Biomass- the amount of organic matter comprising a group of organisms in a habitat. As you move up a food chain, both available energy and biomass decrease. Energy is transferred upwards but is diminished with each transfer.
3
Producers- Autotrophs Primary consumers- Herbivores Secondary consumers- small carnivores Tertiary consumers- top carnivores ENERGYENERGY

300 trout are needed to support 1 man for a year… The trout, in turn, must consume 90,000 frogs, that must consume 27 million grasshoppers that live off of 1,000 tons of grass. -- G. Tyler Miller, Jr., American Chemist (1971)

1. Shade the bottom green, 2 nd yellow, 3 rd blue, & top red 2. Label each side with the terms as you move UP the levels: ① Autotroph, 1 st Order Heterotroph, 2 nd Order Heterotroph, 3 rd Order Heterotroph ② producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer ***Energy Pyramid*** – show the 10% rule in action if starting at 1000kcal at bottom ③ plants, herbivores, small carnivores/omnivores, top carnivores/omnivores ④ draw organisms from the pond ecosystem ***Biomass Pyramid****- show that there are more organisms at the bottom than the top when drawing
