When is it celebrated? On the fourth Thursday in November This year 26 th November

What is it? A traditional day for American families and friends to get together for a special meal It’s a time for people to give thanks for what they have A day where Americans come together around a table

Native Americans Native American tribes Home of Wampanoag people for 12,000 years Many European settlers visited The natives knew the land well and had fished, hunted and harvested for years

The settlers In September 1620, a small ship called Mayflower left England, Plymouth carrying 102 passengers They were religious looking for a new home where they could freely practice their faith The journey was 66 days and many suffered from diseases Only half the passengers survived to see New England There they met a man called Squanto and he taught them how to survive How to cut corn, catch fish and avoid poisonous plants In November 1621, after their first successful harvest they had a celebratory feast and they invited a group of Americans

History They held their second celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought In 1817, New York became the first state to officially adopt the Thanksgiving holiday

Traditions In many American households the celebration has lost its religious significance It is about cooking and sharing meals with family and friends Turkey may or may not have been offered Now 90 percent of Americans eat it
