 What is the importance of the tongue in our lives?  What authority has God given us through the power of our tongue?  How can we tame the tongue? Key Points

 Our tongue sets the path for our lives.  1 Peter 3:10 – For whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.  Galatians 6:7 – Do not be deceived God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Importance Of The Tongue

 Our tongue, though a small part of the body, makes a big impact on the course of our life.  James 3:4-8 Importance Of The Tongue

 We speak what we already think or believe in our heart.  Matthew 15:11 – What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.  Matthew 15:17-19 – Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts- murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. Importance Of The Tongue

 The Lord has given us authority through the power of our tongue. It is our choice to take and use that authority, or not.  Luke 10:19 – I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing by any means shall harm you. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 Our tongue can bless or curse us.  James 3:10-11 – Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?  Psalm 7:15-16 – Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit they have made. The trouble they cause recoils on them; their violence comes down on their own heads. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 Our tongue can bless or curse others.  Numbers 23:8 – How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce those whom the Lord has not denounced?  Proverbs 26:2 – Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 Our tongue can deliver or save us.  Proverbs 13:3 – He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.  Proverbs 21:23 – He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 Our tongue can heal our bodies.  Proverbs 12:18 – Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.  Proverbs 15:4 – The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.  Proverbs 16:24 – Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 Our tongue can speak things into existence.  2 Corinthians 4:13 – It is written, “I believed therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak.  Hebrews 11:3 – By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.  Just as the Father spoke the world into existence, we have the authority to speak things into existence in our lives as they come in alignment with His word and plan. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 Our tongue can bring forth good or evil things.  Matthew 12:34-37 – You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. Authority We Have With Our Tongue

 We can tame our tongue by daily prayer and affirmations.  Psalm 19:14 – May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight.  Job 22:28 – What you decide and decree on a thing will be done, and light will shine on your ways how to get there. How To Tame The Tongue

 Choose to bite your tongue.  Psalm 141:3 – Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips.  Proverbs 10:19 – When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.  Proverbs 17:27-28 – A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even tempered. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue. How To Tame The Tongue

 Purpose your tongue to speak only life.  James 1:26 – If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.  Proverbs 18:21 – The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
