The Small Arms modernization strategy conveys our vision and is the road map for the evolution and development of future small arms into the 21st century.
The Small Arms modernization strategy is a three phase strategy:
Existing Systems (left): Initiation of P3I’s.
Emerging Systems(center): These systems will bridge the gap between Existing and Objective systems.
Objective Systems(right)( ): Represents the starting point of our Modernization effort.
OICW is the center piece for this effort. OICW will replace selected Individual rifles and grenade launchers in selected units.
OCSW will be fielded to replace selected M240B’s, MK19’s, and Cal .50 machine guns.
We do not anticipate a one-for-one replacement of all individual and crew served weapons currently in the inventory with the OICW and OCSW. ?

8. S&T Efforts: ONR ONR is funding two S&T initiatives in FY04/05.
6-2 initiative will study causal factors of tube condemnation.
6-3 initiative will prototype fire control &lightweight systems. Total is over $4M of R&D!
