1. Internalization Definition: Process by which norms become part of individual’s personality Conditions people to conform to society Often “automatic” responses that you have Examples: Stop at red light eat with utensils sit in a desk **This is the most common form of social control.**

2. Sanctions Definition : Rewards or punishments to enforce conformity. Positive sanctions : Rewards for good behavior. Examples: Praise, good grades, pay raises, Olympic medals. Negative sanctions : Discouragement of undesired behavior. Examples: Frowns, threat of having your car towed, imprisonment, etc.

Sanctions can also be formal or informal Formal: Rewards or punishments given out by formal organizations Organizations could be schools, businesses, government, etc. Examples of formal sanctions: Low grades (negative) Diplomas (positive) Out of school suspension (negative) Awards (positive) Informal: Approval/disapproval by an individual or a group Examples of informal sanctions: Compliments (positive) Insults (negative) Exclusion form group (negative) Smiling (positive)
