2 DO NOW In your journal answer the following questions using complete sentences: 1.Why is it important to follow directions? 2.List some things that could happen when you don't follow directions. 3.What is the difference between Oral and Written directions? 4.Do you prefer Oral or Written directions? Why?

3 IMPORTANT STEPS Read pages 1-2 in the LAP Simon Says… What if directions were not properly followed in the following circumstances? In your journal, consider what the consequences would be if: You tried to install a new computer without following the directions. Your favorite baseball team started with the fourth inning. Friends tried to find your house without reading the directions. Your dentist started to drill before numbing your gum. Discuss your answers with a partner.

4 WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Life skill: Basic skill necessary to survive Social skill: A skill valued by people in society, such as manners Consequence: The result of an action. Consequences can be positive or negative. In your Journal:  List three examples of a Life Skill  List three examples of a Social Skill  Identify a consequence of carefully following directions.

5 WHAT WOULD HAPPEN? What could happen if drivers did not follow road signs and directions? Write your response in your journal

6 TEACHER’S DIRECTIONS Teachers give lots of directions—and expect students to follow them. 1.Making sure your name is on your paper 2.Meeting deadlines 3.Formatting work correctly 4.Completing all parts of an assignment The inability to follow a teacher’s directions comes with consequences that may even affect your grade. Some teachers’ policies, for example, state that: 1. They will not accept late work. 2. Papers with no name must be redone to receive credit. 3. Disregarding directions can create more work for you and be costly to your grade.

7 TEACHER’S DIRECTIONS Think about a time when you did not follow the directions given you by a teacher. Have you ever misunderstood an assignment because you didn’t read the directions in their entirety. Journal about what happened and the consequences you experienced. Discuss your experience with a partner.

List three sources for oral directions you receive on a regular basis. List the steps to Follow Oral Directions Eliminate Distractions Make eye contact Listen carefully Acknowledge the directions verbally or nonverbally Know when to speak Take notes Do it

9 WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Oral directions: Verbal instructions Clarification: The process of making something clear and understandable Distractions: Things that interrupt us, causing us to turn our focus away from what we’re doing Interpret: To clearly understand meaning and ideas Misinterpret: Not understanding something as it was intended to be understood Nonverbal: Communication that involves the use of gestures or facial expressions and body language rather than the use of words

10 DISTRACTIONS In your journal : Identify three ways you are sometimes distracted resulting in misinterpretation of Oral directions. What can you do to reduce the distractions so that you can correctly interpret and follow Oral directions?

11 FOLLOW ORAL DIRECTIONS On a blank page in your journal number from 1 to 15 each on a separate line. Listen carefully to each direction and do the calculations in your head. Write down only the answer to each instruction. Reflect and journal on how well you did in following the oral directions. What could you have done to improve your result? What could have been done to improve the directions? Looking at the tips for following Oral directions, are there any additional tips you think should be included?

13 WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Written Directions: Directions given in writing. Sequential: In logical order, as in first, second, and third or A, B, C Key Words: A significant or descriptive word that provides direction and answers the questions Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. In your journal identify the key words in this instruction. Use complete sentences to explain why you chose each of the key words.

15 ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY. Whether you’re following oral or written directions, you need to be aware that knowing and following the directions is your personal responsibility. You should ask for clarification if you do not understand any part of the directions.

16 FOLLOW WRITTEN DIRECTIONS You will have 5 minutes to read and follow the directions given to you on a worksheet. ` Reflect and journal on how well you did in following the written directions.
