2. Who was Nelson…? Nelson was a famous British officer in the navy He was born on 29 th September 1758 in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk Nelson joined the navy when he was just 12 years old Nelson was very brave and fought in many battles He lost an eye and an arm 2

3. Nelson’s ship Nelson had a big ship called the Victory It had a lot of guns You can visit the Victory in Portsmouth Nelson used a telescope to see other ships in the distance 3

4. Life on board the ship Nelson and his men would sail on the sea for many months at a time The men slept in hammocks They would eat lots of biscuits and drink a lot of rum Nelson told his men to eat limes, so they would stay healthy 4

5. Battle of Trafalgar The Battle of Trafalgar was Nelson’s most famous battle It took place in 1805 Nelson was fighting French and Spanish ships Nelson won the battle! 5

6. During the battle Nelson was shot and killed by a sniper His men put his body in a barrel of rum The metal plate on the ship’s deck shows where Nelson fell 6

7. Nelson’s column Nelson’s column is a monument in Trafalgar Square in the centre of London It was built for us to remember Nelson and what he did 7
